Light needs
- Crown of thorns is a full sun plant that appreciates midday shade during the peak afternoon sun in our Texas climate
Watering
- Crown of thorns are tolerant to low water conditions but will begin to drop their leaves if their soil completely dries out
- Crown of thorns will best thrive under medium moisture towards the bottom of the pot, allowing the top couple inches of soil to dry between waterings
Repotting
- Crown of thorns are best grown in pots in Texas as they require protection during the winter
- Provide well-drained potting soil either with sand or perlite
Fertilizing
- To encourage blooms, feed with a fertilizer high in phosphorus (this is the second number displayed on fertilizer bags/bottles #-#-#).
- Fertilizing should be done in the spring and summer months
Overwintering
- As temperatures begin to consistently fall below 40ºF, it is time to bring your crown of thorns in for the winter.
- Find a sunny location inside away from drafty ACs
- A south-facing window typically will provide the most consistent amount of light
