Locate your bougainvillea in a spot that provides 6-8 hours of sun a day, with some shade from the afternoon sun if necessary
Watering
Your bougainvillea will appreciate a good watering regularly and will begin to drop their leaves if the soil dries out completely
Avoid keeping the soil in a constant state of saturation as this can lead to root rot
Repotting
If you have decided to grow your bougainvillea in a container, avoid repotting too quickly as they prefer to become somewhat root bound
Repotting every 2-3 years is a good rule of thumb for keeping your plant healthy and happy
Fertilizing
To encourage your bougainvillea to continue to bloom, feed with a fertilizer high in phosphorus (this is the second number displayed on fertilizer bags/bottles #-#-#)
Overwintering
If grown outside, it is likely that your bougainvillea will need to be pruned all the way back in the winter
Bougainvilleas are somewhat cold-sensitive. During mild winters, they may come back large and beautiful, however during colder winters, they may die back completely
If left outside during the winter, bougainvilleas planted directly in the ground will have a much better success rate
If grown in a pot, it is encouraged to bring your bougainvillea inside during the winter months and reduce your watering rates
